What is leadership?

Well, there are plenty of definitions out there!

I believe that the current British Army definition, based on Action Centred Leadership, is about right

"A combination of character, knowledge and action that inspires others to succeed"

Action Centred Leadership (ACL)

The model that I use, train and coach is Action Centred Leadership (ACL). I am an accredited trainer and coach at the team, operational and strategic levels.

Designed by John Adair for the British Army, ACL offers an immensely flexible framework for leadership training and development. It is still, some 60 years after it was introduced, the chosen leadership model of the British, Australian and New Zealand Armed Forces, as well as the Royal National Life Boat Institute, and many, many other organisations and individuals, for the simple reason that it works, and works well.

ACL clarifies the qualities of an effective leader and what an effective leader needs to be, what an effective leader needs to know and what an effective leader needs to do in order to achieve the task, build and maintain the team and develop individuals. It is simple but not simplistic, practical, relevant and participative.

This is a leadership model that I have personally used for over 37 years. I have seen it work effectively in military, humanitarian and business contexts. I have trained, mentored and coached its use in different cultures and with different age groups. It is a superb model for developing self-leadership. I know that it works
